Happy Thursday everyone :) It’s the day before Valentine’s day. Just saying.

Flashback to this past weekend, when I was given the awesome opportunity to cover the Japanese American Nat’l Museum’s Target Family Days, featuring the good folks from KoAloha Ukulele, based in Honolulu, Hawaii. (Whoa, that was a mouthful!).

Basically, “Target Family Days” at the museum are events where families can attend to experience some fun and exciting activities. This past weekend, everyone in attendance was treated to Hawaiian inspired crafts for the kids, and everything Ukulele, you know, those small-ish looking guitars that are associated with the Hawaiian islands? I learned that they didn’t originate there, but somehow, throughout the years, they have become synonymous with Hawaii. In the Hawaiian language, “Uku” means “flea”, and “lele” translates to “jumping”, hence, “jumping flea”, as the picking/strumming motions mimick. Now you know :)

What really made the day for me was how cool and friendly the KoAloha folks are. All of them, from the company owners, Allan and Paul, to their uber-talented artists and instructs, all exemplified that wonderful Hawaiian sensibility of “Ohana” or family, making for a really enjoyable day for everyone. Really nice folks. Plus, taking in their talent and expertise on how to play the ukulele was simply inspiring! I’m DEFINITELY taking it up! Definitely!

If you’re interested in their ukuleles, check out their site here. I spoke to a lot of people taking classes that day with them, and everyone wholeheartedly suggested getting a KoAloha! With folks like the ones I met on Saturday, I completely agree!

Here’s a glimpse of my day with them. Enjoy!

A huge, special thanks goes out to Tracy L., for giving me this great opportunity :) Mahalo Tracy! Great times with great people :) Aloha!

Happy THIRD week of the new year everyone! How’s it going so far? I truly hope that your holidays were filled with all the joy, family, food, and FUN that is possible. I know mine was! Heck, it feels like just yesterday that I “signed off” for 2013. I guess time does fly when you get old huh? Sigh…

Nonetheless, here we are, 2014. No flying cars or transporters a la Star Trek yet, but hey, we’ve got iPads, computer phones, and this dandy little thing we call the internet. J/K! Not to poke fun, but hey, I AM still waiting on that teleportation device!

2013 ended in it’s usual grand fashion, hanging out with family and friends, and even scored a trip to the happiest place on Earth – yup, Disneyland! Three whole days with the little rugrats and pre-teens from Hawaii. Such a great time. Despite the place being over-populated due to the Rose Bowl, National Championship Game, and vacationing families, it was a great time! Didn’t ride as many rides, but just being there was fun. I just love that place!

New year’s came and went, and for the first time in a while, I was actually sleepy when the clock struck midnight. Should’ve had that extra green tea soy latte I love so much prior to the ball dropping.

A few days after the new year, I was back at work photographing my first wedding of 2014. The amazing, fun, terrific, sweet, cool, talented Aaron and Jill! The wedding and reception took place in a downtown photo studio, complete with food trucks for the main course, AND a surprise showing of the In N’ Out burger truck! What?! You bet I had a few (it was after I was done, come on!).

In a nutshell, that was the end and the beginning of the holidays and new year. How was yours? I wish you all the best that life can give you; many smiles, much success, great food, family, and friends; exciting destinations, beautiful sunsets, the sounds of laughter, and blessings to keep you all safe.

Happy 2014 everyone. Enjoy! And thanks for checking in :)

Mike

Happy 2014! Next week – A visit to the Space Shuttle Endeavor! Yay!!!

Happy beginning of summer everyone! Just kidding – kind of. What with 90+ degree weather we’re experiencing, why not call it summer?! So long as it doesn’t stay this way for too long, I won’t mind it at all (kind of). Now that we’re past Labor Day, summer is truly over. Kids are back in school, and we’re in the 9th month of the year, with just three more months to go till Christmas. Wow.

As for me, Labor Day weekend always marks one of my favorite events of the year, the Disneyland Half marathon. 13.1 miles of pain, suffering, hard breathing, smiles, and a lot of perspiration! All of which are totally worth it! It was my 7th time doing the race, and each time, I enjoy it more and more, even though my body is telling me otherwise. It’s such a well organized race through the “happiest place on earth”. I just can’t get enough of it. Plus, I know that afterwards, we’d head to the parks and enjoy more of the Disney magic we have all come to know and enjoy, and grow up with! This year was no exception. Although I came short of my projected goal due to a lingering injury, I was still able to complete the race with a solid time and a huge medal!

This time through we spent it with my cousins and nephews, all of whom stayed with us at the Disney Grand Californian hotel, courtesy of my cousin Rondee :) (Thanks Rondee!). It’s a great hotel, with some EXCELLENT air conditioning! (What with near 80+ humidity and HEAT, that A/C sure did feel amazing!). The accommodations were awesome, needless to say. Plus, they had a nice pool – super important ;p Despite the super warm and humid temps, we had a great time walking the parks, riding our favorite rides, and just hanging out. Big thanks goes out to Angela and Will for their generosity! They ran the race too (congrats!), and beat me to the line (then again, they are 10 years younger than I am! Besides, they’re quickies!). And to my sister Sarah and her friends for also coming down to spend some time – hope you had fun!

We also decided to take more “fun” photos this trip. Although you’ll only see my photos of Helen here, as all of her are on still on her phone :( Oh well. Included in that phone is a photo I got to take with Joey Fatone, who also ran the race. If you follow my Facebook page you might just find it there.

So here it is, a selection of photos from our 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend. Thanks to everyone who made it special and fun! Now go somewhere where there’s air conditioning will ya?!

August 15, 2013 in Family, Personal

Happy Nisei Week everyone! Yup, it’s that time of year here in L.A., when the annual Japanese American Nisei Week events are held, complete with coronations,  parades and celebrations. Great fun if you live in Los Angeles, and want to experience a different culture’s festivities. It’s held yearly in Little Tokyo, and definitely a must do for anyone interested in great food, fun people, and cool things to see and do.

This past weekend, our improv group, Cold Tofu was honored by the NW foundation as Parade Marshals in the annual parade. With that honor, we were asked to march in the parade, attended by a few thousand people, covering around 2 huge city blocks in Little Tokyo.  I asked if Gunther, our family dog, could take part in it, and was given permission to do so! With great results and fun! So there we were, marching the streets of Little Tokyo, hundreds (thousands?) of people smiling and pointing at the little dog wearing the “Cold Tofu” T-shirt having a super time! Gunther loves people BTW, so he was in heaven meeting people, going up to them, and getting love pats from them. He truly enjoyed himself! Here are some photos from his first parade! (This dog surely gets around).

My favorite photo from the parade – Gunther bringing smiles to senior citizens :)

Nisei week runs through the end of this upcoming weekend, August 18th with events and things to do. Check out Niseiweek.org for more information. Heck, you might even see Gunther there :)

Happy August FIRST everyone! Wow, 8 months into 2013 with only 4 to go! Time sure does fly when you’re having fun. Plus, fall is just around the corner (calendar wise). I’m certain we’ll be getting some summer heat towards October as usual.

Just wanted to post up some random photos I took hanging out with my sister the other night over at LACMA. We had dinner at this great Indian food restaurant (I LOVE INDIAN FOOD), and walked it off by walking over to the museum to hang out with all the other tourists and night-walkers. Cool thing to do on a Tuesday night.

Wherever you’re at, get out and explore your neighborhood or city. It’s a cool thing to do :)
