Happy August everyone! Wow, summer is almost over! Okay, maybe the summer weather isn’t over, but the calendar says we’re in the last month of summer. How’s it going?

Eight months into 2015 and I finally got the opportunity to photograph one of my wedding photography wish list items – a vineyard wedding! Sure, I’ve attended a couple before but have never been lucky enough to photograph one! Not until the amazing wedding of Kera and Danny! For this wedding, my friend Nik invited me along to be the primary photographer, while he worked his video magic throughout the day. Along with my new buddy Joe, we three amigos set out for a long, hot, but beautiful day in the vineyards of Santa Ynez, particularly, Lincourt Vineyards, near Solvang (you know, that Danish town outside of Santa Barbara? Yeah, that one!). It’s such a beautiful little vineyard, complete with everything you would imagine a vineyard to have, picturesque grape fields, a gorgeous wine tasting barn, a beautiful lawn for weddings, a well sized courtyard for events (like wedding receptions!) and most importantly, a friendly, helpful staff ready to lend a hand and a smile when needed. You don’t need to get married there (although if you do, you’re making the RIGHT decision) to visit, so if you’re ever in that area, add it to your list of wine tasting venues – you won’t regret it!

Now back to the wedding!

Sure, a nice venue for one’s nuptials makes for a memorable day, but it isn’t required when the wedding itself is filled with great moments, people and memorable anecdotes of times past. EVERY wedding I photograph is special, from the small courthouse variety to the extravagant shindigs, and this one was no exception. For me, what made this wedding so unique and heart felt was the two families that joined on this day, particularly the absence of the groom’s father who sadly passed away a few years ago. In the ceremony and speeches that followed, you could see how sorely he was missed, and by all accounts, how terrific a person he was. Even I was brought to some tears hearing the families talk about him. He sounded like a great guy, and by the looks of all the people at the wedding, I’m sure he was.

The day itself was terrific all around! From the bride’s dress, to the funny, and comedic groomsmen, to the oh-so-tasty food, this was a great day to get married. I’m just grateful to have been a part of it.

So, with a first, I’m including a link to a slideshow of my favorites from the day right HERE!

A huge thanks to Nik W. for having me along and to Joe H. for the ride up to the vineyard. Oh, and a huge thanks to the staff of Lincourt Vineyards for their great space and hospitality!

Here are a few photos from the slideshow. But do click on the slideshow to see more! Thanks!

April 16, 2015 in Weddings

Hi everyone! Pardon my absence from the interwebs the past two weeks. Sadly, I got sick, and then the week after that, I was out and about with another project with me doubling for a certain famous boxing fighter. More to come with that.

Before all that happened, I was honored and grateful to photograph the wedding day of Michelle and Shannon (that cute couple I featured here a few weeks ago with their E-session). What I love most about these two (and all my couples) are how down to earth, open, friendly, and downright fun to be around during a full wedding day! I guess you can say that I’ve been blessed with some really cool couples :) For these two, it was a doubly awesome day, as not only do I know them really well,  but I know a lot of their families and friends, making the day all that more fun to photograph.

Here’s a glimpse of some of the moments and memories from their wedding day. The ceremony took place at their alma mater, Cal State L.A., and their reception at the Empress Harbor Restaurant in Monterey Park. The wedding venue was especially great as it took place in one of the music school’s theaters! One of my favorite places!

Oh, and after the vows were made, the entire wedding party, led by Michelle and Shannon, did a wrestling pose – what?!!! Awesome-sauce!!! Both sets of families did it too during the formals, grandmas included. See, gotta love great couples ;p

Enjoy!

Thanks again to Michelle and Shannon for letting me photograph their big day; blessed and honored to have done so :) And to my second shooter Andy Ito of Andrew Ito Photography. And thank you to Caroline Tamayose of In2itive Weddings for coordinating the day – you rock Caroline :)

Happy August everyone! Hope everyone is having an august August! (I recently learned the other definition of “august”, and it works quite well with a lot of things, so look it up!)

Yes, once again, it’s catching-up time. Had a few gigs in July that took up a lot of my time. Two amazing weddings with two awesome sauce couples! That and I lived through two weeks of monsoonal weather which made for very uncomfortable days and nights, but who’s complaining?!

As you know, I love photographing weddings. As I’ve mentioned before, I love the fact that I get to create some wonderful imagery for my couples to share and pass down from generation to generation. Plus, I get to work with amazing people, both the couple, and those involved, like their family members, friends, and vendors who are all there to help make the day special. I’ve been blessed so far with working with some downright cool people, rightfully so, as my couples are the ones who select and hire them, and my couples are pretty much rock stars :) BTW, one of my grooms really is a rock-star! He played a mean electric guitar for his new bride during the reception (see below!). Oh, did mention that one of my couples also had their brother/puppeteer officiate their wedding? See below again!

For the two weddings that I photographed, the same held true. I had such a great time, that sometimes, I forget that I’m working! (Plus, the desserts are usually pretty amazing as well!) I love my wedding couples and their family and friends, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Okay, enough gushing about my clients/friends. Here are some images. Enjoy!!!

January 21, 2014 in Weddings

We’re nearly four weeks into 2014, but I wanted to be sure that I featured this amazing wedding couple I had the privilege of photographing, Jill and Aaron.

I first featured these two back in October of 2013 when we did their engagement photos, and even then, I knew that these two were the ideal couple for me – totally fun, outgoing, up for ANYTHING, and just plain cool :) I had met Aaron a few years ago when he came in to Cold Tofu to teach a few classes for us, sharing his immense skills in everything improv. Serious fun! Once I got the opportunity to meet his fiance Jill, I knew that these two were going to be great to work with :)

Now, I’ve photographed a lot of weddings, and sure they’re all different and unique in their own way, but this one had such a cool vibe that complimented Jill and Aaron so nicely. The entire day was pretty much a low key affair, filled with some pretty cool moments, from the uber-delightful, fun, and heartfelt ceremony, to the oh-so funny and poignant speeches made by the best man, maid of honor and bride’s parents. Plus, when it came to dinner, these two decided to go away from the norm and provide their guests with food made from food trucks! Yup, food trucks; REALLY good food trucks! and for me (and the rest of the guests, I’m sure), the piece de resistance, was the In n’ Out burger truck once the dancing got started. What?! And for an encore, instead of the traditional cake or more modern cup-cake servings, they had cookies! These huge, amazingly good cookies, complete with regular or chocolate milk! With straws! (I know, I’m easily won over). And for extra style points, all the guests were treated to cigars and some really good vodka/whiskey choices. If that wasn’t enough, for guest favors, each person was given an envelope with a lottery ticket with the hopes that they too hit it big, just as Jill and Aaron had with one another. Cool huh?

Heck, did I mention the Mariachi band?! Oh hells yeah!

I have to say that I truly enjoy every wedding I get to attend or photograph. Each one is so unique, and filled with great laughter, tears of joy, and fun, that you can’t really compare them. This one definitely will remain with me as one of the all time greats, but not only because of all the fun things and goodies provided, but, as usual, my couple, Jill and Aaron, were just a joy to work for and be around, making my “job” easy, and most definitely, one of the coolest  ever! Thanks you guys :)

A huge thanks goes out to Andy Ito of AKI Visuals for his help at this shoot. Thanks dude!

Happy THIRD week of the new year everyone! How’s it going so far? I truly hope that your holidays were filled with all the joy, family, food, and FUN that is possible. I know mine was! Heck, it feels like just yesterday that I “signed off” for 2013. I guess time does fly when you get old huh? Sigh…

Nonetheless, here we are, 2014. No flying cars or transporters a la Star Trek yet, but hey, we’ve got iPads, computer phones, and this dandy little thing we call the internet. J/K! Not to poke fun, but hey, I AM still waiting on that teleportation device!

2013 ended in it’s usual grand fashion, hanging out with family and friends, and even scored a trip to the happiest place on Earth – yup, Disneyland! Three whole days with the little rugrats and pre-teens from Hawaii. Such a great time. Despite the place being over-populated due to the Rose Bowl, National Championship Game, and vacationing families, it was a great time! Didn’t ride as many rides, but just being there was fun. I just love that place!

New year’s came and went, and for the first time in a while, I was actually sleepy when the clock struck midnight. Should’ve had that extra green tea soy latte I love so much prior to the ball dropping.

A few days after the new year, I was back at work photographing my first wedding of 2014. The amazing, fun, terrific, sweet, cool, talented Aaron and Jill! The wedding and reception took place in a downtown photo studio, complete with food trucks for the main course, AND a surprise showing of the In N’ Out burger truck! What?! You bet I had a few (it was after I was done, come on!).

In a nutshell, that was the end and the beginning of the holidays and new year. How was yours? I wish you all the best that life can give you; many smiles, much success, great food, family, and friends; exciting destinations, beautiful sunsets, the sounds of laughter, and blessings to keep you all safe.

Happy 2014 everyone. Enjoy! And thanks for checking in :)

Mike
